A Conversation With

Dr. Jeremiah as America Celebrates its 250th Anniversary!

Paul Joiner, Chief Creative Officer and Executive Producer of Turning Point, sat down with Dr. David Jeremiah to discuss this milestone anniversary for our country — and what we must do to move forward for the next 250 years.

The real story of America has always been about God, and the most important thing we can do at this milestone is remember and return to His Word as the authority.

Q

So Pastor, we’re celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country. America was founded on biblical principles. Does that still matter 250 years later?

Dr. David Jeremiah

Absolutely. The Bible tells us that the nations that trust in God are going to be okay — the nations that don’t are in for big trouble. This nation was founded on the principles of the Word of God. That’s where freedom comes from.

Q

Pastor, you’ve been known, even in your early ministry, as someone who spoke truth and wisdom from the Word of God. Were you ever asked or tempted to go into politics, and why have you said no and chosen to be a pastor?

Dr. David Jeremiah

When I was a pastor in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a committee came to see me and said they would like me to consider running for a political office. I didn’t even have to think about it. I said, “I would never do that. That would be a step down for me, because I believe I’ve been called to the greatest calling there is — the preaching of the Word of God.” I never look back on that with regret.

Q

Why is it important for Turning Point to remain a voice in the conversation of America today?

Dr. David Jeremiah

The one thing we are totally committed to is making sure that what we say is what God says — that we simply explain to people what the Bible says, what it means, and what it means for them. I think that’s one of the reasons we’ve had staying power.

Q

Have you seen a change in television general programming in the last five, ten, fifteen years in America?

Dr. David Jeremiah

One of the big changes I’ve noticed is the absence of preachers. When I started, there were probably a dozen men doing what I do. Now there are two or three. We don’t have the same number of people teaching the Word of God, which means we need to do it the best we can and make the biggest difference we can.

The television programming outside of the Gospel has just deteriorated — things that would never have been considered proper in years past are now accepted without question.

Q

How do we leave a better America for our kids and grandkids through what we do here?

Dr. David Jeremiah

Families who grow up loving God and loving the church grow up loving each other and loving their neighbors. They’re better citizens. When we teach people how to live in obedience to the Lord, they become better citizens. A person who knows and loves God will know and love his country much better.

Q

Dr. Jeremiah, you’ve been faithfully preaching the Word in the pulpit, on radio, and on television for 40 years. Does it ever discourage you that, after all that time, America still doesn’t have the moral compass pointed in the right direction?

Dr. David Jeremiah

Sometimes I wonder, have we made any difference? But then I think — what would have happened if we hadn’t been there? We are a place where people can go to find out what the Bible says, and for all these years, we’ve never changed. God has promised that His Word will never return void — it will always succeed in accomplishing what He sets it forth to do. With that promise on my heart, I can go forward with confidence.

Q

When you pray for America, how do you pray?

Dr. David Jeremiah

I’ve been praying for revival. Frankly, I see no real solution for this country — no real path forward like the decades we’ve had in the past — unless there’s an intervention from Almighty God. It’s not going to happen politically, or through educational programs, or any of the other so-called change makers. It’s going to take a revolutionary change maker, and that is only God Himself.

Q

As we celebrate 250 years of America, what would be your challenge for our families and our churches in how we best celebrate this milestone?

Dr. David Jeremiah

Go back and realize how we got started. The Bible constantly tells us to remember. When you look at the Israelites, all their celebrations and feasts were to remind them of God’s blessing. To get the best out of our 250 years, we need to go back and remember that God did this. This is an incredible nation — not like any other on earth — because we were built on a foundation that is God Himself.

Our focus must be on souls, not polls.

Prayer for America

Our country needs God. Let’s pray together.

Use this prayer and selected Scriptures to help you pray faithfully for our nation, its leaders, and its future.

One Nation Under God

A Prayer for America

Dear Father,

Living in uncertain times, You are a certain God.
Seeing turmoil all around us, You are the peace within us.
And though the future may seem dim, You are the Light that illuminates our path forward.

Make us one nation under God!

May we remember the high cost that was paid to live in one nation, a nation under God. May we not be fractured by politics or pettiness but stand together as an indivisible people ready to face the challenges of our future. May we graciously live within the freedom and liberty endowed to us by our Creator. And may we seek justice for all — no matter their race, color, or creed.

Make us one nation under God!

Though imperfect, let us become a more perfect union. Sometimes divided, let us learn to live indivisibly. And at times ungrateful, let we, the people, be grateful for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

In You, God, we trust to heal the wounds of our past, give us strength to endure the trials of today, and provide guidance to live together in a more peaceful tomorrow.

Make us one nation under God!

May Your Word direct us,
Your promises keep us,
Your power protect us,
And Your purpose restore us.

May our courage propel us,
Love define us,
Humility constrain us,
And faith unite us.

Make us one nation under God!

Father, we are blessed beyond measure.
Thankful beyond words.
And hopeful beyond imagination.

Make us one nation under God!
