The theme of Paul's letter to the Philippians is joy. Even though he is writing as a prisoner, Paul is filled with joy, which permeates his letter. The secret of the apostle's joy is his relationship with Jesus Christ. The letter begins and ends with the name of Jesus. Forty times Paul mentions his beloved Savior's name, seventeen times in chapter one alone. Paul sees himself as a slave of Christ, and he refers to the Philippians as saints in Christ. He describes his imprisonment as his bonds in Christ, and even though he knows that some people are taking advantage of his imprisonment, he rejoices that Christ is being preached. He desires to win Christ and to know Him, and he points to heaven from whence also he is looking for the Savior. If Paul's relationship to his Master can bring him joy under these conditions, then surely we who also love the Savior can learn to rejoice in our difficult times as well.
